Which camera is better for professional virtual 360-degree tours?
For over ten years, we have been photographing professional virtual tours for companies, hotels, medical practices, museums, schools, and industrial businesses. Until now, only full-frame cameras with fisheye lenses were used for this purpose.
With the Insta360 Luna Ultra, a new question arises: Can a modern 360-degree camera replace a professional full-frame camera for virtual tours?
The Test Conditions
We photographed the same car dealership twice. Once with a Sony Alpha full-frame camera and fisheye lens, and once with the Insta360 Luna Ultra.

Premium Workflow with Sony Alpha
Each panorama consists of several RAW shots. The images are then developed, chromatic aberration is corrected, stitched, and manually optimized.
Standard Workflow with Insta360 Luna Ultra
The Insta360 Luna Ultra creates the complete panorama directly in the camera. After shooting, finished equirectangular panoramas are available.
Shooting Time
The pure shooting time on site was almost identical for both systems. The reason: Each location must be carefully chosen. Doors, furniture, reflections, walkways, and subsequent navigation influence the time required more than the actual triggering.
Post-processing
This is where the biggest difference lies.

Insta360 Luna Ultra
The panoramas come practically finished directly from the camera. In our test, only the shadow of the tripod had to be retouched in some outdoor shots.
Chromatic Aberration
The Luna Ultra panoramas showed practically no visible color fringing. With the Sony Alpha fisheye lens, chromatic aberration had to be corrected in Lightroom as usual.
Image Quality
The Sony Alpha continues to offer advantages in maximum detail resolution, dynamic range, and reserves for extensive post-processing.
The Luna Ultra, on the other hand, delivers high-quality results directly from the camera. For Google Street View or classic corporate tours, the difference will hardly be noticeable to many viewers.
Cost-effectiveness
While the shooting time hardly differs, the Luna Ultra significantly reduces post-processing. This allows virtual tours to be produced more economically.
Based on our initial experience, a Standard production with the Luna Ultra can be offered around 40 percent cheaper than a comparable Premium tour with a full-frame camera.

Our conclusion
The Insta360 Luna Ultra does not completely replace the full-frame camera. However, it closes the quality gap much more significantly than we would have expected.
The Sony Alpha remains our first choice when maximum image quality is required. For budget-conscious customers, the Luna Ultra is an interesting alternative.
